Winnipeg is a gem full of great attractions at the prairie's edge. The home of the Hudson's Bay Company, Lower Fort Garry, and Louis Riel, history abounds at this historic crossroads.

Just north of the city tour the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site and explore its role in the fur trade. Step back in time with staff outfitted in period dress for a look at life in the mid 1800s. The big summer event, the Red River Rendezvous is a real draw for history buffs.

If you are fond of nature, Oak Hammock Marsh is a must see. This is a birder's paradise set in a reclaimed 36-square-kilometre marsh and tall-grass prairie. Thousands of migrating birds stop here on their seasonal travels. Open year-round, you can enjoy exhibits, theatre shows, the observation deck, hiking trails, a gift shop and café.

With many ethnic groups, Winnipeg provides world renowned arts, entertainment, culture and cuisine. It's two week long Folk Festival is one of the largest in the world. If you stay longer you may want to take in a theatre production at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, explore the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, shop at the historic Forks or dine at a fine Greek restaurant.

Do you like money? The Royal Canadian Mint is worth a visit as you head south to Steinbach. This architecturally impressive facility specializes in striking all circulating coins for Canada and many foreign countries. Visitors can watch the minting of coins from a wonderful viewing gallery.
