Now MOM's Way heads east along highway 11 in the Lake
of the Woods Country of northern Minnesota. This is a
big place where childhood dreams from Outdoor Life and Sports
Afield can be realized. From Warroad through Roosevelt, Williams
and into Baudette you are in some of the best hunting, fishing,
and nature watching country in Minnesota. Famous Lake of the
Woods dominates with many top quality resorts and camps on
its south shore. This is country where walleye and whitetail
are kings.
As you tour there's lots to do and lots to see. Highway 11
from Warroad to Baudette is officially recognized as a state
Wildflower Route. Near Williams, the Orchid Capital of the
Nation, you can observe up to 20 varieties of wild orchids
from late May through early August. You're sure to see Minnesota's
state flower, the pink and white showy lady slipper, growing
in large numbers along the highway in June.
From Williams you may want to take a jaunt north to view
the broad expanse of Lake of the Woods from Long Point or
head a bit east to Zippel Bay State Park. Here you will find
a full range of activities. Families are sure to enjoy the
hiking trails, well maintained campgrounds, fishing access,
broad sandy swimming beaches, and birdwatching galore. Winter
brings fine cross country skiing on groomed trails. You just
might see a snowy owl on your trek. This park is truly a year
round delight for nature lovers!
In Baudette, Walleye Capital of the World, there are interesting
things to do before crossing the border back into Canada.
Make sure you get a family photo beside Willie Walleye, the
40 foot fish that helps make Baudette famous.
In town, visit the Lake of the Woods County Museum. Rich
border history is portrayed through exhibits on Lake of the
Woods, geology, natural history, Native cultures, commercial
fishing, logging and agriculture. The old homestead kitchen,
country school room and general store exhibits fascinate all
who visit.
Time for another round of golf? Oak Harbor Golf Course located
along Rainy River just 8.5 miles north of Baudette boasts
a fine 9 holes on a neatly groomed course.
If you want to explore nature some more, Beltrami Island
State Forest is just a short distance southwest of town. It
offers fine fall color tours, bog viewing and a wildlife drive.
