Highway 12 southeast from Steinbach to Sprague and the US border passes through an area rich in agriculture, tourism and wildlife. If you love to explore the wonders of nature and bask in the great outdoors the Rural Municipality of Piney has it all.

This unique natural area, once a part of the ancient glacial Lake Aggasiz, is now rich in a variety of habitats. Here you will find boreal forest, aspen parkland, prairie lakes, wetlands and cultivated land all supporting a huge diversity of plants and animals.

This is a magical place, one of solitary beauty, one to be explored for an hour, a day, a week. As you tour the area watch for the great gray owl, whitetail deer, Sandhill cranes, black bear, water fowl of all types, wolves and lynx.

Heading down Hwy 12, get off the beaten path and visit one of the 9 different provincial forests or natural areas in the RM of Piney. Enjoy your picnic lunch and take a short hike.

Looking for wild flowers? The pallet of color along roads and fields starts in May and never ends until late September. Search and you will find wild crocus, lady slipper orchids, wild columbine and blue flags, just a few of the many wild flowers in the area.

Looking for something else? Try an afternoon of fishing or water sports at Whitemouth Lake, Moose Lake Provincial Park, or Buffalo Point International Resort on Lake of the Woods. Hiking, canoeing, and horseback riding are available too. Winter recreation is fun with great snowmobile trails and cross country skiing.

As an added adventure explore the Northwest Angle & Islands. Leave the blacktop at Moose Lake and follow #308 to Hwy 525 and head up to where history was made. A video call-in system is available when you arrive at Four Corners.

Located along the shore of Lake of the Woods, this is an enchanting world of water, woods and wildlife. Experience birding, fishing, flora and fauna at its best. Tour La Verendrye's Fort St Charles, Massacre Island or the start of the famous Dawson Trail. Year round fun at NWA includes golf, water sightseeing tours, the Blueberry Festival, year-round resorts and lots of winter activities for snowmobilers.

Whether you are just passing through or exploring for the day, be sure to capture some memories with your camera in the RM of Piney.
